Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala kicked off the season finale of the 2021 Formula 2 season by qualifying 10th for the feature race at Abu Dhabi. On the other side of the garage, Dan Ticktum managed to qualify in ninth.
The 30-minute qualifying session on the new layout of the Yas Marina circuit had drivers putting in multiple flying laps for the optimal lap time. The initial runs saw Daruvala line up fourth and well within the fight for pole position. But the Indian driver couldn’t improve in the final runs, and was dropped all the way down to 10th position in the end.
While it's not the ideal grid slot, there’s a silver lining for Daruvala as he benefits from Formula 2’s top 10 reverse grid rules. It means he will start in pole position for tomorrow’s first sprint race. For the second sprint race, the grid order is decided by the top 10 finishers (from Sprint Race 1) reversed.
The first sprint race flags off at 1:45pm (IST) on Saturday, followed by the second sprint race at 8:10pm (IST). All races will be broadcast on Eurosport.
