Jehan Daruvala’s struggles at Silverstone continued, with the Carlin driver finishing 12th in Sprint Race 1, and 19th in the second sprint race at the fourth round of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 World Championship. The Red Bull junior driver’s teammate, Dan Ticktum, took eighth and third respectively.
Starting 12th for the first sprint race, a chaotic first lap melee saw Daruvala drop to 13th place. Once the lengthy safety car period came to an end, the Indian driver immediately retook 12th position. Unfortunately, the Indian driver was stuck in a slipstream train for the rest of the race, and eventually finished right where he started. A difficult first race of the weekend for Daruvala.
Reverse grid rules meant that the grid order for the second sprint race would be the top 10 finishers of Sprint Race 1 reversed. But Daruvala finished 12th, so his starting position remained unchanged. Things didn’t improve at the start, with the Indian driver once again dropping to 13th place at the end of the opening lap.
Unfortunately, Daruvala’s race nosedived from there, as an incident with Bent Viscaal resulted in front wing damage, with the Indian driver dropping to the back of the field after pitting for repairs. While Daruvala recovered to 17th position at the chequered flag, he was hit with a 10-second time penalty for causing the incident with Viscaal. That dropped him to 19th position and last of the finishers.
The two sprint races capped off a very difficult Saturday for the Indian driver. He will be hoping to recover from these setbacks in tomorrow’s 29-lap main feature race where Daruvala will start 12th due to qualifying 12th yesterday.
The feature race will commence at 3:15pm (IST). All races will be broadcast on EuroSport.
