Attempting the alternate strategy made little difference as a five-second time penalty dropped the Indian driver out of a points scoring position

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala, ended his second season in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with an 11th place finish in the feature race at Abu Dhabi. The Red Bull Junior driver’s teammate Dan Ticktum managed a sixth place finish to round off the season.

While the Indian driver didn’t move upwards from his 10th place grid slot early on, he was on harder compound tyres playing the long game via an alternative strategy. This would theoretically mean Daruvala could run extremely long into the race, and then pit for fresher and softer compound tyres compared to the drivers ahead and slice his way up.

With five laps to go in the 33-lap feature race, Daruvala began to slice his way up the field and took ninth position on the final lap of the race. Unfortunately, a five-second time penalty incurred for an incident on the opening lap dropped the Indian driver to 11th place, and out of the points.

Overall, it was a bit of an up and down weekend for Jehan Daruvala and not the ideal way to end his second season in Formula 2. Nonetheless, the Red Bull Junior driver has managed to finish seventh in the final drivers standings at 113 points. He was just seven points away from Juri Vips in sixth position.

Formula 2 will now go on a long off-season break before racing resumes with a new season at the opening round in Bahrain from March 18-20, 2022.
