Despite the weather gods making things trickey it didn’t hamper wheel-to-wheel action one bit

After a long gap, Volkswagen Motorsport was back racing again at Round 2 of the MRF MMSC Volkswagen Championship at the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai. We saw wet weather add a little bit of spice to the weekend, as well as intense wheel-to-wheel action up and down the field with Sai Sanjay and Ritesh Rai taking top honors. Here’s how the race weekend transpired:

Race 1

Qualifying saw Sai Sanjay pull out a commanding lap to take pole position by over four tenths to second-placed Oshan Kothadiya and nearly a second ahead of third-placed Sandeep Kumar. While a heavy downpour severely delayed proceedings, Sai Sanjay continued that momentum from qualifying to drive a controlled race and take a dominant maiden win.

The real action was behind him, with Oshan Kothadiya, Sandeep Kumar and Saurav Bandyopadhyay locked in an intense battle for second place. By the penultimate lap, it was Sandeep Kumar and Saurav Bandyopadhyay coming out on top, finishing in second and third positions respectively.

The next race saw the top 12 finishers of the previous race flipped in a reverse grid order which meant our previous race winner Sai Sanjay lined up 12th with Adil Shah lining up in pole position. While Adil Shah had the early race lead, Ritesh Rai managed to make quick work of the former to take the lead. Shortly after, the race leader was locked in a titanic scrap with Avik Anwar which had extremely close wheel-to-wheel action, as well as a few close calls.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sandeep Kumar, who had a sterling drive from 11th on the grid joined the fight for the lead towards the end. Despite all that pressure, Ritesh Rai held his ground till the end to score a hard fought win.

After an action packed race weekend, we’ll have to wait until January 2022 before racing action kicks off again, with the third round of the season scheduled to run from January 21-23.
