Prema Racing’s Jehan Daruvala kicked off the fourth round of the 2022 Formula 2 season on a strong note, qualifying fourth for the feature race at Barcelona, Spain. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case for his teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver Dennis Hauger, as the rookie qualified 14th on the grid.
In the initial runs of the 30-minute qualifying session Daruvala was looking in fine form, setting the quickest times by a healthy margin to the rest of the field. But for the final runs, the Indian driver gambled on setting his lap time a fair bit earlier than the rest of the field to avoid traffic related issues.
While his pole time did hold up for the majority of the session, the closing stages saw Jack Doohan, Juri Vips and Frederik Vesti go faster, relegating the Indian driver to fourth. But it was a close affair as Daruvala was only a couple of tenths away from scoring his maiden pole position.
Before the feature race, there’s a 26-lap/121km sprint race on Saturday, where the Indian driver will be starting seventh as the grid is decided by the top 10 qualifiers lining up in a reverse order. For Sunday’s 37-lap/172-km feature race, the qualifying results will set up the grid.
The sprint race on Saturday will commence at 9:05pm (IST). All races will be broadcast on Star Sports / Hotstar.
