It was a great sprint race for Prema Racing’s Jehan Daruvala, as the Indian driver finished a close second at the third round of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 World Championship in Imola. It was a positive day on the other side of the garage too, as teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver, Dennis Hauger, took his maiden podium in third position.
Lining up third on the grid for the 25-lap/122km race, the Indian driver got off the line well enough to immediately move up to second place. Right after the safety car ended, Daruvala set off after race leader Marcus Armstrong, and by Lap 12 was right on his gearbox, but the Hitech driver held on to the lead.
Nonetheless, the Indian driver kept him honest for most of the race, and had another opportunity to attack Armstrong towards the end of the race. But Daruvala ran out of laps and had to eventually settle for second place by just 1.4 seconds.
This result catapults Jehan Daruvala into third overall in the drivers standings. But there’s still the main 35-lap/171-km feature race on Sunday left to run. He’ll be starting in eighth position since Friday’s qualifying results decide the grid order.
The final race of the weekend will commence at 1:45pm (IST) and will be broadcast on Star Sports.
