The tightly constrained nature of the Monaco street circuit would’ve left you expecting a processional 2022 Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. Well, not if the weather gods had anything to say about it, as it saw varying strategy calls and gambles that led to Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez triumph. Here are the winners and losers of a chaotic sixth round of the 2022 season:
Winners
Red Bull Racing seemed set to be placed behind Ferrari for the Monaco Grand Prix, but a cleverly-timed overcut pit strategy saw the team get the jump on Ferrari and take a 1-3 finish. But this time it was Sergio Perez who triumphed over Max Verstappen. Sure, a qualifying incident cost a shot at pole position, but Perez had the measure of the 2021 drivers world champion all weekend long.
Despite Verstappen finishing third, it was a positive weekend as finishing ahead of his title rival Charles Leclerc means his lead in the drivers standings has increased to nine points. Red Bull Racing currently lead Ferrari by 36 points in the constructor standings.
George Russell once again keeps up his record of finishing in the top five in every race this season with a fifth place finish. The Briton managed to jump McLaren’s Lando Norris during the switch to dry tyres and held on to that spot for the rest of the race.
It was another good day in the office for Alpine, with double-world champion Fernando Alonso finishing a strong seventh despite his mistake in qualifying. It would have been a double points haul with ninth for teammate Esteban Ocon, but a five-second time penalty for a collision with Lewis Hamilton meant he was relegated to 12th in the end.
Once again, Lando Norris flew the flag for McLaren solo at the Monaco Grand Prix. Qualifying a strong fifth, sure he dropped down to sixth position in the race, this result continues to solidify fourth place in the constructors standings for McLaren on a day when teammate Daniel Ricciardo had a point-less race.
Losers
Ferrari were looking set for a 1-2 finish as a strong counterattack to Red Bull Racing, but it all came undone during the switch to dry tyres. A severe miscommunication error meant that initial race leader Charles Leclerc was forced into a double-stack pitstop with teammate Carlos Sainz, dropping him down to fourth place. Not helped by lapped traffic, Carlos Sainz managed to salvage a second place finish, but it could have been a chance at a maiden win. This result leaves Ferrari and Charles Leclerc having a bigger points gap to Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen in the title race.
The Monaco street circuit was always going to be a difficult one for the team, and it turned out to be just the case despite wet weather spicing things up. Alexander Albon, who already was affected by mistakes and incidents, eventually retired the car. His teammate Nicholas Latifi was fortunate enough to finish 15th at the end after a race full of incidents.
Haas just can’t seem to put together a race weekend as of late. It all started with Kevin Magnussen retiring from the race due to a technical failure, and then Mick Schumacher brought an early end to Haas’s weekend with a crash in the swimming pool section; another race where potential points opportunities were squandered.
Daniel Ricciardo had yet another weekend to forget at Monaco, with the Australian only managing a 13th place finish for McLaren on a day where his teammate Lando Norris was fighting Mercedes for the top five positions. Another point-less result doesn’t help Ricciardo, who’s future at McLaren is beginning to look uncertain with his performances.
After a week’s break, Formula One will be heading to the streets of Baku in Azerbaijan for the eighth round of the season.
