The 2020 Turkish Grand Prix saw history being made as Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took a surprise victory and sealed his 7th driver’s championship to equal Michael Schumacher for the most driver’s titles. And it was a heck of an event with the wet weather and a freshly resurfaced greasy track serving up a chaotic race. While the race started perfectly for the Racing Point duo of pole sitter Lance Stroll and teammate Sergio Perez, it kept evolving with the changing conditions. In the end, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez pulled off a gamble on the intermediates or part slick tyres to finish first and second. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took his first podium of the season in third after a late race scrap saw the German take third from teammate Charles Leclerc.
With only three rounds to go, the focus is now veering more towards 2021 with the provisional calendar revealed. It’ll be a 23-race calendar with the April 25 slot yet to be confirmed. The season is set to kick off on March 21 in Melbourne with Abu Dhabi being the season finale venue on December 5.
MotoGP
The penultimate round of the 2020 MotoGP season has seen its first new premier class champion being crowned since Marc Marquez in 2014. Suzuki’s Joan Mir finished 7th in the race to seal his maiden premier class title. The race itself was yet another thriller as Franco Morbidelli held off Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller to take a close win for Petronas Yamaha SRT. KTM’s Pol Espargaro continued his consistent run at Valencia with another third place finish. With this, Joan Mir became the sixth Suzuki rider in history to take the title since Kenny Roberts Jr. in 2000. There’s still an intense fight for second in the standings as Franco Morbidelli is locked in a close fight with Suzuki’s Alex Rinz heading into the season finale at Portimao next week.
This week also saw Andrea Iannone's doping saga come to an end, as his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to have his initial 18-month ban overturned was rejected. As such, the ban has now been increased to a maximum period of four years.
WEC
Another title decider took place in the form of the 2019/20 FIA World Endurance Championship season finale in the 8 hours of Bahrain. The Toyota no.7 of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez took the final win of the season ahead of the Toyota No.8 of Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley. This 1-2 finish marks a fitting swansong for the TS050 Hybrid at the end of the Lmp1 era.
WRC
With the season finale of the 2020 World Rally Championship in Monza not far off, the organisers have revealed the full schedule for the event. It’ll be a 16-stage event, kicking off from December 3, spanning a route of 505.38km and ending on December 6.
