2021 marks the 60th anniversary of Honda’s first win in MotoGP

Honda is the most successful manufacturer in MotoGP history. It became the first manufacturer to amass 800 victories last year when Jaume Masia won the Moto3 class race of the Teruel GP astride his Leopard Honda. This incredible milestone started 60 years ago. Riding the RC162, Japanese Kunimitsu Takahashi won the 250cc class at the 1961 West German Grand Prix. To commemorate this occasion, Honda, along with legendary watchmaker Casio, has created a limited edition wristwatch.

This Honda x Casio timepiece is heavily inspired by the RC162 racer. It features a brushed aluminium bezel and aluminium dial, like the fairing of the race-winning bike. The red and yellow livery has also been neatly integrated into the dial. You also find an old-school traditional ‘Honda’ logo etched into the yellow stripe. Lastly, the black and red leather strap is meant to mimic Takahashi’s race leathers.

Built on the Edifice series, this special watch is water-resistant, uses solar power to charge the batteries, and has other such fancy modern bits that you would hope to find on a premium timepiece. While Casio has not specified how many units of the EQW-A2000HR-1AJR (yep, that’s the model name) it will build, it has announced the price: ¥77,000 (Rs 50,880 approx). The watch will go on sale in May.

This is not the first time the two brands have collaborated on such an effort. Together, they have created five watches already, all for Honda’s Formula One effort with Torro Rosso.

This announcement comes on the same weekend as the opening MotoGP and F1 race in Qatar and Bahrain. After going winless in 2020 in the premier class of MotoGP, can HRC get back to its winning ways soon? Or will they have to wait until Marc Marquez, who has to sit out the opening race, gets back up and running? Stay tuned for our motorsport coverage of both races.
