A 5-second time penalty costs Indian driver dearly

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala had an unfortunate end to round 10 of the FIA Formula 2 World Championship at Sochi, Russia, thanks to a 5-second penalty dropping him to 11th in a suspended sprint race. His teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver Yuki Tsunoda finished 6th.

Starting 4th, Daruvala did make an attempt for 3rd place, but dropped to 5th at the end of lap 1. Daurvala was immediately on the move and had a couple of attempts into turn 2. But the second attempt cost him another two positions. A lap later, the race was stopped due to a massive accident between Luca Ghiotto and Jack Aitken in turn 4.

Eventually, with the damage to the barriers being extensive and running tight on schedule to accommodate the Formula One Grand Prix, the decision was taken by the stewards to not restart the race. This scenario led to the finishing order being decided on the basis of lap 5 of the race.

While Jehan Daruvala technically finished 5th on the road, he was hit with a 5-second time penalty for not rejoining the racetrack in a legal manner after he went off-track at turn 2. This dropped him to 11th. It was an abrupt end to what looked like another strong points haul.
