The difficult start to Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala’s rookie F2 season continued as the Indian driver finished 12th forin the second round of the wet feature race of the second round of the FIA Formula 2 World Championship at the Red Bull Ring circuit. On the other hand, teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver Yuki Tsunoda finished a close second after starting on pole.
After a wait of nearly an hour due to treacherous track conditions, the feature race was reduced to 36 laps and started after 4 laps under the safety car. While Daruvala was holding on to 9th place after the first and only round of pit stops, an off-track excursion at turn 4 in in the closing stages saw him drop to 12th place and finish there. On the other side of the garage, a miscommunication between the team during the pitstop phase was pivotal in relegating Tsunoda to 2nd in the end.
The top eight finishers from the feature race will line up in a reversed order for Sunday’s sprint race which will be run over 120km (28 laps) or 45 minutes.
It looks like another weekend to forget for Jehan Daruvala, but the good news just like last week’s season opener is that there is another chance to make up lost ground at the sprint race tomorrow which will commence at 2:40pm (IST).
