Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala followed his ninth place in qualifying at Spa with eighth place at round eight of the FIA Formula 2 Championship at Monza. His teammate and fellow Red Bull junior driver Yuki Tsunoda took 2nd in the end.
Daruvala was just 16th after practice while Tsunoda topped the timesheets. The initial runs in the first half of the 30-minute qualifying session saw Daruvala pull out a close 3rd, and just a few hundredths off pole with Tsunoda close behind in 6th.
With the field incredibly close, placing the car at the right point for a good slipstream effect pays dividends. The final few runs saw a raft of position changes as Daruvala did improve on his lap time but dropped to 8th, while Tsunoda shot up to 2nd. Unfortunately we were robbed of a last lap showdown due to a late red flag. That said, the margins are extremely close up and down the field.
As things stand Jehan Daruvala is in a strong position for the 30 lap (60 minutes) feature race. Holding on to a top 8 finish will end up even stronger for the sprint race on Sunday due to the top eight finishers from the feature race lining up in a reversed order for the sprint race.
The feature race commences on Saturday at 8:15pm (IST) and will be streamed live on the official F1 YouTube channel.
