JK Tyre may be well known as a tyre company, but it's been a long-standing pillar for Indian motorsports since the ‘80s when it supported The Himalayan Rally. From then on, the firm has enjoyed plentiful success in the rallying arena and it now has the infrastructure for promoting motorsports in the country, which includes conducting various championships to nurture budding talent.
2022 sees JK Tyre celebrate four decades in motorsport, and with that, the firm has announced a variety of plans for the future, including a scholarship programme for future talent.
It is common knowledge that pursuing a career in motorsport requires a lot of resources. JK Tyre’s new scholarship programme will be offering up to 300,000 Euros (around Rs 2.4 crore) to help budding racers make their way up the motorsport ladder that little bit easier. Not everyone’s going to get it of course, as five athletes, including one female, that have made a mark in the domestic motorsport arena will be selected for this programme. The first recipient has already been selected by the name of Amir Sayed. The 17-yr old from Kottyam was crowned the 2020 JK Tyre Novice Cup Champion in 2020, winning all 12 races of the season. He will be competing in the French F4 Championship this year.
This year will also mark the 25th anniversary of the JK Tyre National Racing Championship. Expect the remaining racers yet to be selected for the scholarship programme to be announced in the near future.
The other big news is from three-time APRC (Asia Pacific Rally Championship) champion, seven-time INRC (Indian National Rally Championship) champion and Arjuna Awardee Gaurav Gill. The Indian rally veteran will make a return to the FIA World Rally Championship, announcing his participation in the Safari Rally in Kenya scheduled from June 23 to 26. He’ll be racing in the WRC2 category, piloting a Skoda Fabia R5.
