This past week saw a variety of topics in the motorsport world make headlines. They range from a strategic Formula One Spanish Grand Prix, and an action packed Monaco E-Prix, to a key announcement on FIA’s push for sustainability. Here’s everything that transpired
Formula One
The 2021 Spanish Grand Prix saw varying tyre strategies spice up racing action up and down the field. In the end, it was a strategic masterstroke from Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes to pull off a two-stop and take the race win ahead of the Red Bull Honda of Max Verstappen. The sister Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas completed the podium places. With this result, Hamilton further extended his championship lead over Verstappen by 14 points.
Formula E
Formula E’s debut at Monaco’s full 3.32km layout turned out to be quite the drama-filled race. It was the D.S TeCheetah of Antonio Felix Da Costa who took a thrilling win thanks to a last lap overtake on the Jaguar of Mitch Evans. In fact the finish for second and third place was even more dramatic, as the Envision Virgin Racing of Robert Frijns pipped Mitch Evans to second by less than three hundredths of a second. The end of the seventh round of the season sees Robert Frijns lead the drivers standings, with Mercedes holding the lead to Jaguar in the teams standings by just two points.
WRC
This week saw a pivotal moment for the FIA in its push for sustainability, as WRC has announced that it will run 100 percent sustainable fuel from the 2022 season onwards. This makes the World Rally Championship, the first FIA championship to use sustainable fuels. P1 Racing Fuels will be the exclusive provider for the series under a three-year agreement.
DTM
Preseason testing for the 2021 DTM season came to a closure with its second and final test at the Lausitzring. Over the three-day test, Arjun Maini ended the test fifth fastest for GetSpeed Mercedes. The 8-round season will kick off at Monza from June 18-20.
