With two of its all-muscle 650cc superbikes and one very hefty power packed cruiser already visible on our city streets, Korean bike maker Hyosung has surely given its brand a strong foothold in the higher capacity superbike territory, albeit struggling with offering a competitive pricing for any of its models currently on sale.
That being said, a wave of new developments, the most anticipated of which is the arrival of the new Hyosung GT250R (Read : Hyosung GT250R Road Test) now gets the green signal and has been officially launched in the country with a price tag of Rs 2.75 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Despite sharing the same design DNA as it older sibling, this lower displacement entry level sporty offering from Hyosung will reach out to a wider customer base, especially those looking to upgrade from their premium 180-200cc commuters to something more radical and quick on the streets.
Powering the new Hyosung GT250R is a 249cc Vee-twin dishing out 27PS@ 10,000 rpm and 22Nm of torque at 8,000rpm. Assisted by a 5-speed Constant Mesh gearbox this Korean quarter-litre sportsbike can hit a top speed of 149km/h. In our recent tests, the sparkling nature of the GT250R’s motor got us from a 0-100km/h in a scant 8.33 seconds. Those are impressive numbers for 250cc motorcycle weighing 188kg!
Although engine and gearboxes will continue being shipped in from Korea, Hyosung with the able support of DSK plans to achieve 90% localization in the next 18 months, so don’t be surprised if the prices for these bikes are slashed to half within 18 months of the start of local assembly.
For those saving up for something special this festive season, Hyosung also plans to launch a naked version of its GT250 in September this year, which will be followed by the launch of its GV range of cruiser models starting with the GV650 post September and the entry level GV250 around January or February next year.
