The BMW X6 took the automotive world by surprise in 2008 with its oddball styling but buyers world over have seemed to like its imposing stance and appeal. A quarter of a million X6 owners later, the X6 gets another update which is more pleasing to the eye and with more power packed in. This wasn’t unexpected though as the X6 is based on the X5 and the X5 received an update last year so it was bound to be passed on to this car.
So the story goes the same way… Better styling, more power, more fuel efficient, rear air suspension, the likes. Let’s take a look in detail though. Now that we have begun to accept its strange styling, the X6 SUV, or Sports Activity Coupe as BMW likes to call it, borders on being a head turner for more right reasons than wrong. Smarter lights, a sculpted new bumper and a new grille take centre stage and the new alloy wheel designs build on its appeal. Special effort seems to have gone into making the rear look more pleasant so you see better headlamp detailing and design, a neatly finished diffuser and two split exhausts.
The X6 will be available with a V8 petrol in the xDrive 50i, a straight-six diesel in the 30d which we are now familiar with as it is borrowed from the X5 xDrive 30d and a M50d which gets three turbochargers fitted to the straight six diesel. A 35i and 40d variant will follow and we expect India to get the 30d and 40d on priority. The 30d develops 262PS of power and 560Nm of torque and the 40d dishes out 317PS.
The X6 was known to have a harsh ride which wasn’t much of a concern abroad but for Indian users, it was. The rear air suspension with adaptive damper control should smooth things out better and offer a more pliant ride. The X6 is also 22 percent more efficient says BMW due to addition of the Eco Pro mode and an aero package that should come as standard on the India bound X6. The interior too gets a massive update in the quality of materials used and the added features.
