BMW has taken the wraps off the next-generation 2-Series, the 2017 BMW 230i Coupe and 230i Convertible, as well as their high-performance siblings, the M240i Coupe and M240i Convertible.
Underneath that unchanged bodywork, both the new 230i Coupe and 230i Convertible now come powered by the latest-generation 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 248 PS of peak power and 350 Nm of torque. According to BMW, the engine offers even smoother power delivery and efficiency, along with the increased horsepower and torque, good enough to make it the fastest BMW 2 Series that isn’t an M Performance model. The 0-100 kmph sprint times range from 5.8 to 5.6 seconds for the Coupe models -- the 8-speed Steptronic version being the faster option -- while the drop top versions will reach the same benchmark speed in 5.9 or 6.1 seconds.
Then there’s the BMW M240i that now features a new inline-six cylinder engine with 335 PS and 500 NM of torque. That’s 15 PS more power and 52 Nm more torque than before. As a result, the new engine produces the same performance levels as the much-loved BMW 1 Series M Coupe, with a zero-to-96 kmph time of 4.2 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than its predecessor. Both Coupe and Convertible models will be equipped with the latest eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission, which is standard. Rear-wheel-drive models can also be had with a six-speed manual as a no-cost option.
Also part of the standard equipment on the M240i are M Sport suspension that lowers the sports coupe by 10mm, 18-inch M wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, an M Sport braking system with fixed multi-piston calipers, Variable Sports Steering with Servotronic function, a model-specific M aerodynamic package and exterior mirror caps finished in Ferric Grey Metallic.
The new 230i Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in international markets this July. If it makes its way to our shores, expect it to be priced around the Rs 30 lakh mark and pitted against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.
