The Cruze sedan from the house of Chevrolet hasn’t seen the success that the company anticipated on Indian soil. It is powered by a brilliant engine under its stunning-looking exterior, but because of the below-average resale value and ordinary after-sales service, it has failed to make its mark in the D-segment sedans category. In 2015, Chevrolet launched the new-gen Cruze in the US market with a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. While it is slated to receive a diesel mill in the US early next year, Chevrolet will also replace the Cruze currently on sale in India with its new avatar.
Unlike the current sedan, which is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel mill to pump out 166PS of power and 360Nm of torque, the new Cruze is expected to get a 1.6-litre ‘Whisper Diesel’ engine. The engine has been developed jointly by Opel and Vauxhall, both of which, just like Chevrolet, are owned by General Motors. While the smaller engine is likely to be less powerful than the one it replaces, it is bound to be more fuel-efficient and less harmful to the environment. Along with the diesel engine, Chevrolet is also expected to introduce the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol mill that does its duty in the US market, as an option for the Cruze in India.
Once launched, the new-gen Cruze will lock horns with the new Hyundai Elantra which was recently launched in India. Just like the Elantra, which has received an overwhelming interest from prospective customers across India, Chevrolet would also want robust customer interest for its D-segment offering, provided that the American automaker can come up with a strong-enough recipe. Apart from the Elantra, the new Cruze will also take on the likes of the Skoda Octavia and Volkswagen Jetta.
