2017 Wrap-Up: Top 5 Quickest Motorcycles We Tested

With 2018 edging closer, we decided to take a trip down memory lane to take a look at some of the fastest motorcycles we got our hands on. Starting with the slowest of the lot, here’s a list of the top five quickest motorcycles (0-100kmph) that we tested. 

Yamaha MT-09

The Japanese have mastered the art of delivering outright performance and excellent engine refinement, and the most shining example of that this year was the Yamaha MT-09. Not only is it sharp, unhinged and borderline lethal, the MT-09 is also one of the fastest motorcycles we've ever tested. The bike sprinted from 0-to-100kmph in just 3.73 seconds!

The MT-09 is powered by an 847cc, in-line triple, liquid-cooled engine that makes 115PS of power at 10000rpm and 87.5Nm of torque at 8500rpm. It is priced at Rs 10.88 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Ducati Multistrada 1200S

The Multistrada 1200S is certainly one of the best adventure tourers out there. Its capabilities include crunching long miles and combating rough terrain. The Ducati Multistrada 1200S is also quite fast for its gargantuan size and dry weight of 212kg! During our tests, the Ducati Multistrada 1200S sprinted from 0-to-100kmph in 3.71 seconds, which is considered to be superbike territory!

It is powered by a 1198cc L-twin engine, which is essentially an updated version of the Ducati Testastretta engine with DVT (Desmodromic Valve Timing) seen on the XDiavel. This engine delivers 162PS of power at 9500rpm and 128Nm of torque at 7500rpm. It's updated version, the Multistrada 1260S is expected to be priced around Rs 18-19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Kawasaki Z900

The Z800 was Kawasaki's most popular 'big bike' in the country. However, the company decided to up the ante by bringing us the new Kawasaki Z900 this year. As expected, it certainly excelled in many areas, one of them being its sheer ferocity in gaining momentum. The Kawasaki Z900 is certainly fast, completing the 0-to-100kmph run in 3.70 seconds while delivering punchy performance.

Powering this is a 948cc, in-line four, liquid-cooled engine capable of producing 125PS of power at 9500rpm and 100Nm of torque at 8000rpm. It is priced at Rs 7.68 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

Ducati 959 Panigale

Ducati is known for producing some of the prettiest and brawniest motorcycles in the world, and the Ducati 959 Panigale is no exception. The 959 Panigale impressed us in terms of design. It doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance either. The 959 Panigale accelerated from 0-to-100kmph in just 3.69 seconds, which is just 10 milliseconds slower than the fastest bike we tested this year.

Ducati has equipped the 959 Panigale with a 955cc, liquid-cooled, L-twin engine. This motor produces 159PS of power at 10500rpm and 102Nm of torque at 9000rpm. Ducati has priced it at Rs 14.58 lakh (ex-showroom India).

Triumph Street Triple RS

The Triumph Street Triple RS checks all the boxes when it comes to performance and practicality. It’s no slouch when it comes to speed either. In our road test, the Triumph Street Triple RS sprinted from 0-to-100kmph in 3.59 seconds! Yes, that’s faster than many supercars on sale in the country! The motor has been designed for better low-end and mid-range performance and, along with the short gear ratios, the Street Triple RS took our crown as the fastest bike of 2017.

Speaking of the engine, the RS is powered by a 765cc motor that puts out 123PS of power at 11700rpm and 77Nm of torque at 10800rpm. The Street Triple S, on the other hand, is powered by the same 765cc engine. However, when compared to the RS,  it produces 113PS of power at 11250rpm and 73Nm of torque at 9100rpm. The Street Triple RS is priced at Rs 10.55 lakh (ex-showroom India), while the Street Triple S is priced at Rs 8.71 lakh (ex-showroom India).
