Just days before its official reveal, the all-new Hyundai Santro (AH2 hatchback) has been all but revealed in the latest spy shots. Said to have been taken in a dealership, the pictures, for the first time, reveal the front cascading grille, headlamps, tail section and the interiors of the car. And while there is still some camouflage covering the orange exterior, we now have a pretty decent idea of what the new Santro will look like.
Starting from the front, the new and bigger cascading grille (much bigger than the Grand i10’s) dominates the front fascia. There is a subtle chrome outline around the five horizontal slats that make it look premium. The sharp creases on the bumper show that Hyundai has given the design a fair bit of thought to make it appeal to the masses.
The tail section is mostly plain, but there is a large glass area for better visibility and small taillamps, which will make the rear of the car look bigger. There is a reversing camera right in the centre, feed from which will be relayed by the centre infotainment display inside. There is no badging on the tailgate, because of which we can't confirm whether the upcoming hatchback will be called a “Santro” or not.
The interior layout looks like a mix of the Grandi10 and the Verna. Between two vertical centre AC vents sits a 7-inch touchscreen, just like the Verna. And the lower part of the centre console, which houses the AC control knobs and a perched-up gear lever, seems to be derived from the Grand i10. The two-tone dahsboard coupled with silver accents around the AC vents and the gear lever make for an upmarket feel. There are also some buttons behind the gear shifter which could be power windows and lock/unlock switches. In term of features, the new Santro will pack decent kit and will rival the likes of the Tata Tiago and the Maruti Celerio.
The Hyundai Santro will be powered by a 1.1-litre petrol engine, which will come mated to a 5-speed manual and an optional AMT gearbox. Claimed fuel efficiency is expected to be around 20kmpl. Hyundai is likely to price the hatchback from Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. A low cost of purchase, running and maintenance, with the Hyundai family look, we can already see the Santro on top of the sales charts.
