After resurrecting the Czech Republic-based brand from the dead, Mahindra & Mahindra has been busy setting up shop for Jawa in India. Meanwhile, the iconic brand has introduced its all-new offering for the European market, simply called the Jawa 350 Special.
Designed to pay tribute to the bikemaker's racing heritage, the Jawa 350 Special sports a look reminiscent of the race replica from the 60s and 70s. It features a fully faired bodywork, a retro colour scheme and healthy usage of chrome all over. Helping it complete the retro racer look is the rounded headlight cowl, a flat seat, twin upswept exhausts and a cowled tail section. The bike is also 10kg heavier than the 350 OHC version at 171kg (kerb) and comes with a 17-litre fuel tank.
Powering the motorcycle is the same 397cc air-cooled, fuel-injected unit that is seen on the Jawa 350 OHC. The engine itself is produced by Chinese manufacturer Shinray while the fuel injection system is made by Delphi. It produces 28PS of power and 30.6Nm of torque.
Two years ago, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a 60 per cent stake in Class Legends Private Limited, the company that holds a trademark for BSA and an exclusive license brand with Jawa Moto. Out of the two, Mahindra plans on bringing Jawa to India while BSA might be aimed at foreign markets such as USA and UK.
Mahindra clearly hopes that Jawa's lineup might disrupt Royal Enfield's ever-growing influence in the segment. Considering Jawa's cult status between the 80s and 90s with bikes like the Yezdi, that might not be impossible. Mahindra is set to launch its first motorcycle under the Jawa banner sometime next year.
