Do Not Miss It!: Our comprehensive First Drive Review of the 2018 Maruti Swift

2018 Maruti Swift

The rumour mills can hold their horses now. Maruti Suzuki has officially released information regarding what is easily the most anticipated hatchback of the year — the third-gen Swift. Let's quickly run through the basics, shall we?

How's it any different?

For starters, it's based on Suzuki's Heartect platform that promises to be lighter and sturdier. In terms of dimensions, the Swift is wider by 40mm and has a 20mm longer wheelbase, which Maruti says will aid cabin space. The bootspace has also been increased to 262-litres.

Maruti is also claiming a 24mm improvement in headroom. The back seat angle is a tad more reclined than before too, they say.

What's under the hood?

The familiar duo of Maruti engines. Nothing new to report about here as the new Swift carries forward the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that makes 83PS/113Nm, and the 1.3-litre DDiS190 diesel that produces 75PS and 190Nm. What's new, however, is the transmission. For the first time, the Swift will be available in an automatic avatar. Maruti has chosen its tried-and-tested automated manual transmission (AMT) for the job. Just like the Ignis and the Dzire, the new Swift gets petrol-automatic and diesel-automatic variants.

What about variants and colours?

The new Swift will be offered in the familiar L, V, Z and Z+ variants with both petrol and diesel engines. Additionally, the V and Z variants can be had with an automatic transmission, taking the total tally up to 12. At launch, there won't be a fully-loaded automatic variant on offer.

Colours include a new "Lucent Orange" among other popular Maruti shades such as Midnight Blue, Fire Red, Arctic White, Silky Silver and Magma Grey.

What features are on offer?

Quite a whole lot. We will be doing a separate story on how the variants stack up, so do keep an eye out for that. Highlights on the feature list include automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six-speaker audio system, LED projector headlamps and 15-inch machine-cut alloy wheels. The best bit - dual airbags, anti-lock brakes and ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard across the range.

When can I book one? Also, how much?

Bookings began unofficially a week ago. However, they've now commenced officially. Maruti Suzuki says the new Swift can be booked for a token amount of Rs 11,000.

Prices will be announced shortly. We aren't expecting them to stray too far away from the current Rs 4.8 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh mark.
