BMW pulled the wraps off the latest generation of its coveted roadster, the Z4, at Pebble Beach 2018. The Munich carmaker debuted the new roadster in the M40i First Edition trim in the Frozen Metallic Orange hue.

BMW Z4 engine

The M40i is powered by a BMW signature, 3.0-litre straight-six engine that produces 340PS of max power. The torque figure is yet unknown. In traditional roadster fashion, power is sent to the rear wheels only. BMW hasn’t divulged the transmission details either but expect the car to be armed with an 8-speed ZF-sourced automatic gearbox. The new Z4 also boasts of a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. As for the suspension, it comes with an M Sport suspension setup with electronically controlled dampers. The 0-100kmph sprint is tackled in 4.6s (claimed) and we believe the top speed will be limited to 250kmph.

Aesthetically, the Z4 looks quite similar to the concept it is based on. Front fascia is dominated by the kidney grille which features a mesh design and is flanked by vertically stacked LED headlamps with matrix function and high beam. Bonnet is long with a swooping curve in true roadster style, while the cabin is placed almost at the rear of the car. And ends right where the rear wheel arches begin. An integrated spoiler sits on the bootlid below which sit wraparound all-LED taillamps. In profile, the Z4 looks like a roadster should. The compact roadster rides on 19-inch light alloy wheels boasting a double-spoke design.

Cabin is focused towards the driver and is rather minimalistic. Z4 is the first roadster to get BMW’s HUD (heads up display).  BMW Live Cockpit Display replaces traditional dials and gives the cabin a futuristic look. The BMW Connected Drive system is also in place and control surfaces look premium and focused towards the driver. The cabin itself is bathed in black leather upholstery with contrasting stitching and two bucket seats.

The worldwide launch of the Z4 will happen in March 2019. It can be expected to arrive in India by late 2019 or early 2020.
