Maruti has silently launched the dual-fuel CNG option of the WagonR. Available only in the base variant, the LXI CNG has been priced at Rs 4.84 lakh, whereas the LXI (O) CNG costs Rs 4.89 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom Delhi). This is a premium of Rs 65,000 over their respective standard petrol variants. The CNG option is only available with the 1.0-litre engine option which has been carried over from the older WagonR and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It produces 68PS of power and 90Nm of peak torque. Fuel efficiency for the petrol fuel is 22.5kmpl and for the CNG is 33.45km/kg.
The Wagon R S-CNG variants will be available in states with existing CNG infrastructure, namely, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, certain regions of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The LXI is the base variant and hence, gets only the basic features. On the outside, you get body-coloured bumpers and 13-inch steel wheels with 155/80 tyres. Inside, you only have a driver side sun visor, front accessory socket, front power windows and a manual AC. It misses out on some basic features in the segment like wheel caps, fog lamps, rear wiper and washer, body-coloured door handles, 60:40 split seats, day/night IRVM, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, rear power windows, rear parcel tray or any kind of an audio system.
In terms of safety, the standard equipment includes a driver airbag, ABS, EBD, seatbelt reminder for both front occupants, speed alert system, rear parking sensors, rear door child locks and central locking. You can also pay Rs 5000 more and get a passenger-side airbag along with pre-tensioners and force limiters for the front seatbelts, front fog lamps, day/night IRVM and a rear parcel tray for added convenience.
Since it's available only in the LXI variant, it seems to be an appealing low-cost option for the commercial market. We wish it was also available in the VXI variant, making it appealing for personal users as well. The WagonR CNG will rival the likes of the Hyundai Santro CNG which is priced at Rs 5.24 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), but has more features.
