UPDATE: We’ve driven the new WagonR! Check out our detailed review by following the link: Maruti Wagon R 2019 Review
Maruti’s tallboy wonder is all set to enter its fourth generation tomorrow. First launched way back in 1998, the WagonR has set the benchmark for what’s considered a cheap and cheerful city runabout. With the update, Maruti will look at capitalising on the WagonR’s strengths, that of ample space, it’s easy-to-drive nature and inexpensive maintenance costs. This, we think should be ample for Maruti to maintain a healthy lead over its competitors that include the Tata Tiago, Datsun Go and the newly launched Hyundai Santro.
Key changes? Well, there’s a big one under the hood. For the first time ever, the 2019 Wagon R will be offered with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. This motor is the same unit we’ve seen under the hood of the Ignis, Swift, Dzire and Baleno. It’s got 83PS of power and 113Nm of torque on tap, and will be available with a 5-speed AMT as well as the standard manual transmission. However, this engine will be limited to the top two - V and Z - variants only. The bread-and-butter 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine will be carried forward as well. This motor makes 68PS of power and 90Nm of torque, and will be offered with the same transmissions as well.

On the features front, the WagonR gets a brand new touchscreen infotainment system that Maruti Suzuki likes to call the ‘SmarPlay Studio’. Other features include four power windows, manual air-conditioning, steering-mounted audio and call controls, and a rear wiper/defogger. Sadly, there’s no LED daytime running lamps to be had, neither are there alloy wheels. Safety features include dual airbags (only driver airbag is offered as standard), and ABS with EBD.

We’re expecting prices for the new WagonR to start at around Rs 4 lakh for the base-spec L variant, and go all the way up to Rs 5.5 lakh for the Z AMT variant. What are your expectations on the price front? Let us know in the comments section below.
