Waiting for our first drive review and images of the 2020 Honda City? We’ve got some bad news for you. Honda Cars India has postponed the unveiling ceremony as well as the media drive of the 2020 City due to the Coronavirus scare. The Japanese manufacturer is yet to announce when it will finally take the wraps off the India-spec sedan.
This is not the first time a car manufacturer has cancelled an event due to Coronavirus. Hyundai India resorted to launching the 2020 Creta online due to the highly contagious virus while Volkswagen India will do the same with the upcoming T-ROC SUV that’s slated to launch on March 18. Even German carmaker BMW launched the facelifted X1 through a live video on its website.
The global automotive industry has taken a big hit due to COVID-19. GIMS 2020, also known as the Geneva International Motor Show, was cancelled due to Coronavirus while the organisers of the 2020 New York International Motor Show have decided to postpone the event to August.
Coming back to Honda’s bread and butter model, the new City is the fifth iteration of the sedan in India. It retains traditional Honda design elements such as the thick chrome grille. Meanwhile, the silhouette of the new car is almost identical to the version it replaces. Inside, the 2020 City comes with a brand new dashboard that features a simple and minimalistic design. Have a closer look at the City in our detailed image gallery.
The India-spec 2020 City will be powered by two engine options: a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel. Specifications for the BS6-compliant 1.5-litre i-VTEC motor have already been revealed and it develops more power than the existing unit. Honda will offer the City petrol with manual and CVT options. Meanwhile, the diesel motor is expected to develop 100PS like the BS4 version. It could be offered with a manual and CVT as well.
The 2020 Honda City is expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, it will lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Vento BS6, Hyundai Verna 2020 and the upcoming Skoda Rapid TSI.
