Hyundai India has launched the diesel variants of the Elantra from Rs 18.70 lakh. It’s offered in the top two variants -- SX and SX (O) -- and comes with two transmission options. Now that the base-spec S variant has been discontinued, you need to shell out Rs 1.71 lakh more for the entry-level Elantra. That said, all three petrol variants have received a price cut of up to Rs 89,000 in a bid to accommodate the diesel variants.
The Hyundai Elantra diesel is offered with a BS6-compliant 1.5-litre unit that develops 115PS of power and 250Nm of torque. Yes, this is the same engine that’s found under the hood of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Just like both the SUVs, the Elantra can be had with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter. It must be mentioned that the figures are 13PS and 10Nm lower than the earlier 1.6-litre unit which developed 128PS and 260Nm.
Apart from the addition of a diesel engine, the refreshed Elantra remains more or less similar to the facelifted model. You can have a look at its features and petrol engine specifications right here.

The Hyundai Elantra diesel currently has the upper hand in its segment as it’s the only model to feature an oil burner. However, it’ll soon face competition from the Civic, which will feature a BS6-compliant 1.6-litre diesel engine. Read more about it here.
