Right after the 2020 Hyundai i20 was teased through design sketches, we spotted the hatchback being tested on our roads. The third generation i20 will undergo a major revamp with sharper looks, BS6 powertrain options and added features. Expected to enter India by mid-2020, here’s everything you need to know about it:
Hyundai’s camouflage game seems to be strong. Nevertheless, we managed to catch a glimpse of the headlamps, the overall side profile, and the LED tail lamps. Meanwhile, the recently released sketches give us an idea of what the 2020 i20 will look like. Expect it to be sharper and more focused than the existing version, and we dig how it looks in the sketches. But we’ll reserve our final comments since there are some Hyundai design sketches in the past that haven't turned out to our liking. Case in point - the new Aura.
There will be three BS6 powertrain options to choose from. The petrol options will include the 1.2-litre motor from Grand i10 Nios and the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol from the Venue and Aura. The turbo-petrol is expected to put out a solid 120PS and 173Nm, mated to either a 7-speed DCT or a 6-speed manual. The oil burner is likely to be the same 1.5-litre CRDi unit from the Seltos, albeit in a lower state of tune. This engine will also find its way into the Venue over the coming few months. The diesel might be paired with a 6-speed MT or an AT. Furthermore, we can also expect to see a sportier variant of the i20 along the lines of the Grand i10 Nios Turbo.
Since we’ve got a sneak peek of the upcoming i20’s cabin, we do know that it might get a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system. Other features that are expected to be offered include Hyundai’s BlueLink connected car technology, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, cruise control, a wireless phone charger, and a sunroof.
The upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March 2020 will witness the i20’s world premiere. Shortly after that, we expect Hyundai to debut the hatchback in India. Key rivals for Hyundai’s premium hatchback include the Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz, Toyota Glanza, and the new Tata Altroz. Currently, the Hyundai i20 is priced from Rs 5.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
