A while back, Hyundai globally revealed the 2020 i20 featuring completely redesigned exteriors and a new set of powertrain options. Closer to home, the hatchback was spied testing with heavy camouflage ahead of its expected August 2020 launch. And now, the hatchback has been spotted testing in South Korea sans camouflage.
The new i20 is longer and wider than the current generation Elite i20. Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness design language gives the i20 a sharper look with a new cascading grille that joins with the headlamps. Other highlights include large LED tail lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. Overall, the hatchback gets a mature design language and is also a bigger car than before.
The gist of the matter will be two engine options. There will be a 1.0-litre T-GDi motor delivering 120PS, paired to a 7-speed DCT or a 6-speed manual transmission. Markets abroad also feature a 48V mild-hybrid system with this engine. Another engine option for India is the 1.5-litre CRDI diesel unit (100PS) from the Venue. The BS6-compliant 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine (83PS/113Nm) might also be offered with the Indian-spec i20.
As for the equipment on offer, expect a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, Blue Link connected car tech, and ambient lighting. Other notable features include cruise control, climate control, a premium sound system, and a wireless charger.
We expect the 2020 Hyundai i20 to be priced above the current version, which starts from Rs 6.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Key rivals include the Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and the Honda Jazz.
