Hyundai has teased the 2020 i20 hatchback for the first time through a set of design sketches. The hatchback gets a complete design overhaul following Hyundai’s new ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language. And boy, it looks more like a hot hatch! The new i20 will debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show in March, while we expect it to debut in India by the second half of 2020. Hyundai’s focus this year is clearly design overhauls. Case in point, the 2020 Creta we saw at its Auto Expo 2020 pavilion just last week, and the Aura before that.
Going by the sketches, Hyundai seems to have taken a different approach with the design. The hatchback looks mature and sharper than the outgoing version. Some design highlights include the cascading grille, which leads to the headlamps, sharp window line, and large tail lamps. Overall, it looks like a huge step up from the current design but we’ll reserve our final comment until we see the production version.
Hyundai is yet to give us a glimpse of the cabin but spy shots from Europe have revealed that the new i20 will come with a digital driver’s display and a big touchscreen infotainment system (both 10.25 inches). Whether these make it to the India version remains to be seen. Other novel bits include the steering wheel and the aircon controls.
It is expected to feature BlueLink connected car technology, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, cruise control, a wireless phone charger, and an auto-dimming IRVM. The 2020 i20 might also get a sunroof.
We expect the new Hyundai i20 to come with three BS6-compliant engine options for India. The petrol engines could be a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated unit (83PS) and the Venue’s 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which has already been shown with the Grand i10 Nios Turbo at auto expo. The oil burner will most likely be a detuned version of the Seltos’ 1.5-litre CRDI engine. The existing 1.4-litre CRDI will face the axe in April when the BS6 norms kick in.
Hyundai is expected to bring the 2020 i20 to India sometime after its global debut at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. It will rekindle its rivalry with the Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz Toyota Glanza, and the new Tata Altroz. Expect the new i20 to carry a premium over the current starting price of Rs 5.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
