Hyundai Motor India has started testing the 2020 i20 in the country. The test mules spotted in Tamil Nadu look similar to the hatchback seen in Europe. The spy shots also reveal a key feature of the next-gen i20 - a sunroof! We also know that it will come with the Venue’s 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The i20 has been a very successful model for the Hyundai. In fact, the hatchback is so popular that it found 14,683 homes in October alone.
The addition of a sunroof is sure to enhance the i20’s appeal. If the sunroof makes it to the production model, the i20 will become the first car in its segment to offer the feature we Indians love. Spy shots of the hatchback from Europe also reveal digital dials with top notch graphics. We also got a peek of the dashboard, which now gets a big floating touchscreen infotainment system like the one seen on the Kia Seltos. Other design updates include a new three spoke steering wheel and redesigned climate control knobs.
The test mule also reveals Hyundai’s latest interpretation of the cascading grille along with sharp halogen projector headlamps. Nope, no LEDs here. In profile, the upcoming hatchback looks identical to the current model. It was seen wearing dual-tone alloy wheels that look similar to the ones offered in pre-facelift version of the current Elite i20. However, the 2020 i20 lacks a rear quarter glass that’s seen in the existing car.
The 2020 Hyundai i20 is expected to come with three powertrain options - two petrols and one diesel. The oil burner is likely to be a detuned version of the Kia Seltos’ BS6 1.5-litre engine as Hyundai will discontinue the 1.4-litre CRDi engine post April 2020. Petrol options will include the 83PS 1.2-litre Kappa engine and the Venue’s 125PS 1.0-litre T-GDI motor. All powertrains will be BS6-compliant.
Hyundai is expected to showcase the 2020 i20 at Auto Expo 2020. It could launch the premium hatchback by mid 2020 in the country. Naturally, it is expected to be priced at a premium over the current car, which retails from Rs Rs 5.53 lakh. Its primary rivals include the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz and the Tata Altroz.
