The Hyundai Elite i20 Finally Gets A BS6 Upgrade

Our last brush with the Hyundai Venue was two days ago when Hyundai launched its petrol BS6 variants. The missing link in the equation was the BS6 diesel, which is likely to be launched soon after the much-anticipated 2020 Creta’s launch on March 17. But, unlike the petrol versions, the Venue diesel in its BS6 attire gets a change of heart. Yes, it will use the Kia Seltos’ BS6-compliant 1.5-litre CRDi unit. Later this year, we also expect to see the same powertrain in the Kia Sonet.
The Venue BS6 diesel’s launch will be a soft one as we believe Hyundai is also preparing for one of its biggest launches of this year - the 2020 Creta. Arriving after its larger cousin, the Venue diesel could also be one of the last BS6 updates from Hyundai before the BS6 switchover deadline of April 1.
The engine in question, the 1.5-litre CRDi from the Seltos, could be offered in a lower state of tune in the Venue. At present, the engine develops 115PS of power and 250Nm of torque in the Seltos. As for the gearbox options, we expect to see a 6-speed manual and possibly a 6-speed automatic. The existing 1.4-litre BS4 diesel engine dishes out 90PS/220Nm mated to a 6-speed manual. We expect the figures from the 1.5 to be just a smidgen higher.
The petrol variants of the Venue got dearer by Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 after the BS6 update. Since the diesel is getting a bigger engine, we don't expect the hike to be in a similar range. Instead, look out for a premium that hovers around the Rs 50,000 mark.
In other news, Hyundai will also be launching the Grand i10 Nios Turbo in the next couple of days. Hyundai has slowly but effectively been updating its entire lineup to comply with the upcoming emission norms. Key rivals for the Venue are Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300, and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Launched in India on May 20, 2019, the Venue has proved a runaway success for Hyundai.
