Competition has caught up in the mid-size SUV space with new players like the MG Hector, Kia Seltos and the Tata Harrier eating up most of the sales numbers. It is no secret that Mahindra’s readying the next-gen 2020 XUV500 to fend off this newly formed competition. We have spotted the upcoming SUV on test numerous times but this is the first time the interiors have been spied, revealing an upmarket looking cabin with a flat-bottom steering wheel.
What stands out from the new cabin spy shots is the horizontally oriented floating touchscreen display which is also a part of the instrument cluster. It looks like a fairly large unit, measuring around the 10-inch mark. The aircon vents and controls are positioned below and the whole dashboard layout actually reminds us of the Kia Seltos. Another striking element is the new 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel.
From the last set of spy images, we found the 2020 XUV has lost some of its wilderness and traded its old-school door handles for flush-fitting ones. Other design highlights include a more upright front end and revised tailgate design. Going by the dimensions and the success of the outgoing model, the 2020 XUV500 will most likely remain a 7-seater SUV.
Powering the new XUV500 might be two new BS6 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines. Both are expected to develop more power than the existing 2.2-litre engines (Diesel: 155PS/360Nm; Petrol: 140PS/320Nm). Transmission duties will be taken care of by a 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox with the option of all wheel drive. It is safe to speculate that the SUV will come with goodies such as a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and push-button start, dual-zone climate control, powered tailgate, and sunroof.
Mahindra will most likely unveil the SUV at the Auto Expo 2020. Currently, the SUV is priced from Rs 12.31 lakh to 18.52 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and expect the new XUV500 to carry a premium over this pricing. Rivals include the MG Hector, Tata Gravitas, Kia Seltos and the 2020 Hyundai Creta.
