Going by the sales numbers, it is safe to say that MG has played its cards well and is off to a promising start. The Hector has a lot going for it, but MG is planning to up the game even further with a 6/7 seater version of the SUV in the coming months. It was earlier spied undisguised inside MG’s facility in Halol and right now, we have more spy shots of the SUV testing on our roads.
The most obvious change to the front is in the form of the LED DRLs with a novel design element. The lower bumper also sees some changes with a tweaked headlamp layout. Another spy shot reveals changes to the rear with a new set of tail lamps and a revamped bumper design, which sports a faux skid plate with fake exhaust vents. It was seen running on a set of diamond cut alloy wheels similar to the Hector.
These design tweaks will definitely give the 6/7 seater version of the SUV some differentiation from the standard 5-seater Hector. That said, we can't rule out the possibility of these changes seeping into the standard Hector. Also, according to an interesting development, MG might give the 6-seater Hector a new name for further distinction. Going by the spy shots from the factory, the SUV is expected to be offered in a shade of blue. The Baojun 530 (Hector’s Chinese version) was already offered with a 5/7-seater layout in Asian markets. But it recently got a facelift with the inclusion of captain seats in the middle row making it a 6-seater.
Powertrain options for the Hector 6-seater are expected to be the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel motor. The petrol engine is good enough for 140PS and 250Nm of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed manual and a DCT. Meanwhile, the diesel engine is capable of producing 170PS and 350Nm paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. We expect MG to update both these engines to meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms.
The exact launch timeline is yet to be revealed but we expect a launch sometime in mid-2020. With the addition of extra seats, it will compete against the upcoming Tata Gravitas and the 2020 Mahindra XUV500. A premium of around Rs 1 lakh can be expected over the Hector, which is priced from Rs 12.48 lakh to Rs 17.28 lakh (ex-showroom).
