Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you just can’t ignore maxi-scooters. But unlike the wannabe 125cc maxis that we see on our roads, the genuine ones over in Europe pack some serious firepower. Case in point are the BMW Motorrad C 400 X and C 400 GT, which have just received their Euro 5 update.
The X is designed as an urban runabout that can also take on a bit of light off-roading. As a result it features a pretty rugged appearance, with styling cues borrowed from BMW’s GS range of adventure bikes. The GT, meanwhile, has more of a grand tourer vibe to it, with a more prominent apron and front screen.
Both scoots have been around since 2018, but for this year BMW has made some key changes. An updated ride-by-wire system and a revised engine management system work in conjunction with a new exhaust system to ensure that emission levels are kept within Euro 5 limits. This is achieved with the help of a new catalytic converter, wideband oxygen sensor and a reworked cylinder head.
The end result is 34PS and 35Nm from the 350cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder motor, making them even more potent than the TVS Apache RR 310. These being maxi-scooters, the features list is long and includes full-LED lighting, a TFT dashboard with Bluetooth connectivity, USB charging and keyless operation. Prices in the UK start from £6,545 (Rs 6.60 lakh) for the C 400 X and £7,290 (Rs 7.35 lakh) for the C 400 GT. Fortunately or unfortunately, the prices are of little to no relevance to us, because there is little to no chance of these maxis coming to India anytime soon.
