  • The new Mahindra XUV500 is expected to be unveiled soon.
  • Features a dual-tone black-cream dashboard with silver highlights.
  • To come with dual-zone climate control, electronic parking brake, up to seven airbags, and possibly Level-1 ADAS (autonomous tech).
  • Will be provided with the Thar’s 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, albeit with more power.
  • Likely to be priced from Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom).

The 2021 Mahindra XUV500 has been spotted yet again, with the spy shots this time divulging a few crucial details. For instance, the test mule confirms that Mahindra would provide it with a diesel-automatic powertrain. Also, the interior has been spied undisguised.

The dashboard layout looks modish, now sporting a dual-tone black-cream colour scheme with silver elements aplenty. Much like the Hector Plus and the Safari, the new XUV500 could either be a 6-seater with captain seats or a 7-seater with bench seats for the middle row.

But the piece de resistance is the Mercedes-like digital instrumentation and touchscreen infotainment system. Both units are made of a single slab of glass, which lends a premium feel. Going by the spy shots, the touchscreen infotainment system seems like it could be operated via a swivel wheel as well, making life easier while driving. The new XUV500 will get a host of new features over those of the existing model, including dual-zone climate control, a full-fledged panoramic sunroof, electronic parking brake with auto hold, up to seven airbags, and (possibly) Level-1 autonomous driving tech with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning.

The SUV will borrow the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines from the Thar, albeit with more power. Both engines should be provided with an automatic gearbox, though these spy shots confirm that the diesel engine does come with one. A 6-speed manual transmission will likely be standard. We reckon the 2021 XUV500 would be offered with an optional all-wheel drive (AWD).

The SUV is expected to be unveiled soon ahead of its likely launch towards the middle of the year. That said, supply chain issues, which are already plaguing some of the existing Mahindra models, could delay its debut. The SUV will likely retail from Rs 14 lakh onwards (ex-showroom), pitting it against the MG Hector Plus and Tata Safari.
