A Ford patent filed in 2017 depicts two electric motors paired with the classic Mustang V8-rear-drive powertrain
  • The next-gen Mustang could be a plug-in or self-charging hybrid vehicle.
  • The pony car is expected to be launched in 2022.
  • It will be based on Ford's CD6 platform.
  • Deliveries of the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV is set to begin in other countries this autumn.

Ford had announced it would have 18 mild-hybrid and fully-hybrid models by 2022. A step towards that goal has now emerged in the form of the hybrid Mustang sports coupe. Set to get a generation change in 2022, the new Mustang will get a four-wheel-drive hybrid V8 powertrain.

The American muscle car has a loyal following which has been waiting for the hybrid Mustang. Ford has had a plan in the works since 2017 and had even announced that a hybrid Mustang would be brought to the market in 2020. These plans were delayed when the carmaker shifted its focus towards the Mustang-inspired Mach-E electric SUV. With that plan now fulfilled, Ford is back on track with the hybridisation of the Mustang powertrain.

The 2017 US patent suggests that it will stick to its classic V8 engine powering the rear wheels. In addition to this, the car will also include two electric motors at the front wheels, giving the Mustang all-wheel-drive and possibly torque vectoring. The electric motors will improve efficiency in normal driving conditions and assist the V8 in track conditions.

The new Mustang will be based on Ford's CD6 platform, which also indicates that it will retain its four-seater configuration. While the Mach-E features a lot of advanced gadgetry, we can count on the Mustang to be more driver-focused with less attention on infotainment features and toned-down driver assistance. The design of the Mustang is expected to see minor changes to its overall iconic appearance.

After a long wait, the hybrid Mustang is finally a reality. Since it went on sale globally in 2015, the availability of this historic model outside the United States has led to the Mustang becoming more popular than ever.

In India, the S550-generation Mustang carries a price tag of Rs 74.61 lakh. The hybrid powertrain is likely to come at a premium. Since the globally-sold Mustang will be available in right-hand drive, we could see the S650 Mustang on our shores in the coming years. Here’s to hoping the Mustang lives on in India.
