The new Nissan Z is here, and has got a lot to live up to. It comes almost a decade after the first 370Z, which is no less than an icon by itself, rolled out from its factory. And considering how popular the 370Z is, it’s quite evident that expectations are going to be sky high for Nissan’s entry-level two-door sportscar. Thankfully, the new Z has already gotten off on a positive note if first impressions are anything to go by.
Let’s start with the mechanicals. A 6-speed manual, rear-wheel drive and a twin-turbo is the perfect recipe for sheer driving fun. To be more specific, there’s a 3-litre twin-turbo V6 developing 400PS (68PS more) and 474Nm is present under the Z’s hood. Now, Nissan is yet to reveal the 0-100kmph figures, but it claims the Z is 15 percent quicker. So you can expect a decent step up over the 370Z’s 5.4-second timing.
Not a fan of the manual gearbox? Fret not, there is an automatic available as well. Handling is also expected to be much better than before, as Nissan has retuned the chassis, suspension, and the mechanicals. Its braking prowess should also be much better as the Z relies on larger brakes with performance-oriented tyres.
Another factor that needs talking about is the Z’s iconic design. The Z Proto impressed us with its design that harks back to the original Z. And the good thing is Nissan has kept most of its quirky elements such as the LED lights, squared-off grille, and the overall silhouette untouched in production form. Also, depending on the variant you pick, it comes with either 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.
The Z’s cabin layout is fairly simplistic with two screens comprising the infotainment and digital driver’s display adding a modern touch. However, the three dials in the centre of the dash comprising the boost pressure, battery voltage, and turbo speed is a classic JDM touch. Oh, and the sports seats are similar to the ones you get in the GT-R, also known as the ‘Godzilla’.
The new Nissan is slated to go on sale in the USA in early 2022. It will be an alternative to its long-time JDM rival, the Toyota Supra, and take on the BMW Z4, and the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SL.
