Jeep as a brand needs no introduction since it is part of the elite list of the most iconic automotive brands in the world. During its 75th anniversary year, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles-owned Jeep entered India with two of its models -- the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited. Let’s take a closer look at the Wrangler Unlimited and see what’s what.
Looks
A simple design with big, burly outlook makes the Wrangler Unlimited a Jeep thoroughbred. On the front, it has the signature design mantra of a slotted grille with round headlights on each side. At the back, the spare wheel is bolted on the tailgate. The tailgate slipts between the rear windshield and the door. One can remove the doors and the roof completely and transform the SUV into a proper off-roader. One can also choose between a hard-top or a soft-top, both of which are detachable. With 238mm of ground clearance and 17-inch wheels with chunky 245/75 tyres, the Wrangler has got the basics covered to tackle almost any kind of surface. On the looks of it, the Wrangler Unlimited looks like an elongated, grown-up version of the Mahindra Thar.
Features
The Wrangler Unlimited, although quite big, is a five-seater SUV. The interior trim is available in two colour options -- black and tan. The car supports a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display with GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, Voice Command Feature over Bluetooth, and USB and AUX ports for music. The creature-comfort list continues with heated front seats, automatic climate control, power windows and tyre-pressure monitoring. A car that is designed to go off-road must have relevant safety features in place and the Wrangler Unlimited is no exception. It comes with electronic stability control, hill-start assist, traction control, remote keyless entry and front airbags.
Engine and Transmission
Under the hood, the 2.1 tonne SUV gets a 2.8-litre diesel motor that churns out 200PS of power and 460Nm of torque. The mill is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The car returns a certified fuel economy of 12.1kmpl and features an 85-litre fuel tank.
Off-Road Capability
Jeep has made its reputation for designing rugged SUVs which can take on almost any kind of surface. The Wrangler Unlimited comes with a 4x4 drivetrain which is designed to deliver equal power to all four wheels, when activated. Features like hill descent control and hill-start assist help the driver have control over the car in the toughest of terrains. Jeep is so focused on the off-road capability of its cars that all the electronics for the doors and for the roof run through the center of the car. This helps in removing the doors and the roof panel without any hassle.
Price and Competition
There is only one variant of the Wrangler Unlimited on offer, and it is priced at Rs 71.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). In terms of competition, the Wrangler doesn’t really have any in India. All the other SUV options in this price bracket are soft off-roaders from European car manufacturers.
