It looks clean, it looks posh and it looks futuristic. The I.D. Crozz was revealed at Volkswagen’s traditional Group Night gala, on the eve of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. It is a ‘Crozz-over’ between a SUV and a 4-door coupe and it is a part of Volkswagen’s electric mobility campaign to expand its electric car model range. The car maker will initially introduce three models in 2020 before launching 23 all-electric models by 2025.
To make this happen, Volkswagen will spend 6 billion Euros on the project in the next 5 years. A move to get ahead of increasingly stringent emission norms and also something to make up for the bad PR VW recently faced for its pollution-spewing, cunningly-rigged diesel cars.
Getting back to the I.D. Crozz, the crossover has been further developed since its design reveal in April, to turn it into a more realistic target for product implementation. Thankfully, that hasn’t taken away much from the car so far. It still looks like an ethereal being from the future with its grille-less face, broad bonnet, subtly shaped spoiler, and a glossy black exterior roof. What catches the eye most, though, are the LEDs of the headlights that merge into the VW logo, just like other electric models from the German carmaker. It looks especially good when coupled with the Crozz’s ‘Hibiscus Red Metallic’ colour. Despite all these elegant changes to its character, it still manages to look like a sporty, masculine SUV.
The I.D. Crozz looks so roomy that it reminds you of the TARDIS from Doctor Who. The car will also come with Volkswagen’s newly developed Clean Air System and an automatic voice assistant that allows opening or closing the doors and also activate or deactivate the self-driving ‘I.D. Pilot’ mode through voice commands.
When it comes down to the specs, one electric motor powers the front, while one powers the rear. The system delivers 305PS of power and gives the I.D. Crozz a claimed top speed of 180kmph. It can run 500km on a single battery charge, and can charge up to 80% in just 30 minutes when hooked up to a fast charger.
Volkswagen expects to launch the production version of the car by 2020 along with the all-electric Polo hatchback. Both of them are expected to feature completely digital displays and promise to be zero-emission cars.
