It’s a well-known fact that electrics are the future and carbon-neutral vehicles can help tackle climate change. Well, sort of. You see, EVs may not emit any greenhouse gases but the process of manufacturing lithium-ion batteries requires a large amount of energy and raw materials and produces more global warming emissions than your average petrol-powered vehicle. The generation of this kind of electricity is heavily dependent on coal, which adds to the CO2 emissions.
Taiwanese designer Lin Yu Cheng may just have a fix to this issue. His Aether Motorcycle Concept works like an air purifier on wheels. The bike basically incorporates massive air intake ducts that channel air into ceramic filter modules capable of purifying PM 2.5 microparticles. The result is clean air being released into the environment through the bike’s ‘exhaust’. The concept works on the same principle as air purifiers seen in newer four-wheelers. Moreover, cleaning the filters is as easy as just washing them or swapping them out for new ones.
Cheng’s Aether concept basically incorporates existing technology that could make life much simpler. One such example is wireless charging. The bike’s underbelly acts as a wireless charger. So you can park the bike in a wireless charging-equipped parking spot and it will fully charge within 30 minutes. Sure, the infrastructure doesn’t support it yet, but the technology is already available. It’s just a matter of amplifying the output to support larger vehicles, instead of smartphones. But, that’s easier said than done, right?
According to Lin Yu Cheng, the concept would ideally pack a 10kWh battery and a 108PS electric motor that can deliver an estimated range of 200km on a single charge. It's quite pratical too with 22-litres of storage space sitting right about the ceramic filters.
Overall, the Aether concept looks like something right out of the future, with angular body panels, future tech, and a rather aggressive riding posture. The bike does, however, integrate a couple of standard equipment such as a final chain drive, rear monoshock as well as some mainstream wheels and tyres.
The concept may never see the light of day, but perhaps two-wheeler manufacturers could embrace the idea of a cleaner running EV that could help slow down, if not stop global warming altogether.
