Akbar Ebrahim, a prominent face in the Indian motorsport community, has been elected as the president of the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of India (FMSCI) at the 43rd Annual General Meeting, held in Chennai on Monday. Ebrahim has a diverse motorsport history and has left his mark on Indian motorsports through racing, nurturing his racing team and new talents. He takes this spot from Zayn Khan, who was elected as the president back in September 2015.
In our telephonic interview with the newly appointed president, he revealed FMSCI’s immediate plans along with hints on FMSCI’s future plans. Here’s how it went:
Q- What are your immediate plans?
A- The first step would be to appoint commissions, as for each discipline of motorsport in India there’s a commission. The commissions will be finalised by January 20, 2017, and thereon we will draw up a plan so that they can carry the sport forward in their respective disciplines.
Q- Is there any expansion plan for motorsport in India?
A- Indian motorsport is very huge, and while big events (manufacturer supported events) are thriving at a better pace, the smaller disciplines need attention. So, we would be working on new ideas in order to promote them. Additionally, we will be organising workshops for our officials, marshals and track staff to enhance their knowledge so that motoring events can grow safer and smoother.
The Federation will also organise increased training programmes for the marshals and will be providing them with licenses. These licenses will automatically register them as authorised FMSCI marshals and will enable the Federation to summon them whenever an event is being held.
Q- Are there any plans for the betterment of motorsport infrastructure?
A- If any new track promoter approaches us, we will offer them our full guidance. Also, we would be interacting a lot with the ministry (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports) and various government authorities in order to support the motorsport infrastructure in the country. Obviously, one cannot be travelling from North to South or West to East every time there’s a motoring event. So we will see how we can develop more facilities across the country in various disciplines of motorsport.
We hope Indian motorsport reaches new heights with Akbar Ebrahim as the president of FMSCI.
Apart from Ebrahim, FMSCI also saw various other appointments. J Prithviraj, who headed FMSCI in 2014, has been elected as the vice president. In addition, he will also serve as the counsellor of the Coimbatore Auto Sports Club (CASC).
Other appointed counsellors: KD Madan of Madras Motor Sport Club (MMSC), Sanjay Sharma of Calcutta Motor Sports Club (CMSC), Shivu Shivappa of Karnataka Motor Sport Club (KMSC), Ketan Mehta of the Indian Automotive Racing Club (IARC), Arindam Ghosh from Ramakrishna Race Performance Management (RRPM) and Ebrahim from Meco Motorsport Club.
