Alex Rins and Suzuki Racing Company have confirmed that the 24-year-old Spanish rider will continue to race for Suzuki in MotoGP for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. This move comes as a crucial one when it comes to the rider market in the coming seasons. Considering the 2020 season hasn’t even begun and there is a development freeze until at least the start of 2021, this gives more indication towards riders likely to stay in their current teams.
Alex Rins’ contract extension marks the fourth rider to have his post-2020 future sealed, with Maverick Vinales retained by Yamaha for 2022, Fabio Quartararo joining the factory Yamaha in 2021 and Marc Marquez continuing with Repsol Honda until 2024.
Alex Rins began his stint at the premier class of MotoGP with Suzuki in 2017, with his first podium finish coming in 2018 with 3rd in Argentina and eventually finishing 5th in the overall standings that year. While the 2019 season was a bit up and down, Alex Rins did score his maiden win at the COTA Grand Prix, with the next one coming at a sensational photo finish at the British Grand Prix. All this gave him his career best finish of 4th in the rider’s standings.
2020 pre-season testing has looked relatively positive for Alex Rins and the 2020 Suzuki GSX-RR, but how good the bike is will only be found out once the season begins. As things stand, the season is tentatively set to commence on June 21 at Sachsenring, Germany.
