June 24, 2020, will see Alfa Romeo celebrate its 110th anniversary. Commemorating this occasion, the Italian carmaker has revived the GTA name with the Giulia GTA. The GTA acronym stands for ‘Gran Turismo Alleggerita’ (alleggerita being the Italian term for ‘lightened’). This term originated back in 1965 with the Giulia Sprint GTA, a more extreme version derived from the Sprint GT. Similarly, the Giulia GTA is essentially a more aggressive version of the Quadrifoglio with a host of performance upgrades, inside and out.

The main upgrade is, of course, under the hood. Its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 now produces 540PS of power, which is 30PS more than the Quadrifoglio. All this gives the Giulia GTA a 0-100kmph sprint time of 3.6 seconds. Other performance gains include weight-saving measures like carbon fibre bits in the hood, roof, front bumper, and fenders to make it 100kg lighter than the base car. Its suspension system has also undergone an upgrade for better cornering prowess. For an even more extreme experience, the GTAm variant sports two carbon-fibre bucket seats, a roll bar instead of rear seats, and six-point harnesses.

On the outside, the Giulia has had its aerodynamics revised with help from its Formula One technical partner Sauber. Some highlights include an active front splitter, 20-inch alloy wheels, a large diffuser, and a titanium exhaust system. The GTAm variant goes one step further with a bigger front splitter and a carbon rear wing.

On the inside, the GTA variant features Alcantara finish on the door panels, dashboard, and pillars. The GTAm variant, on the other hand, gets Alcantara finish at the empty rear space and Lexan windows instead of the side and rear glass.

Unfortunately, the Giulia GTA will be a rare gem as only 500 units will be produced. Alfa Romeo is also throwing in a Bell helmet with GTA livery and a full Alpinestars race suit inclusive of gloves and shoes for these 500 lucky owners.
