A Maruti Suzuki Wagon R test mule has been spotted without an exhaust muffler, indicating it could be the production-spec electric version of the tall-boy hatch. This model could be part of its joint venture with Toyota that sees both manufacturers sharing vehicles, platforms, and powertrains.
Maruti Suzuki has been testing the Japanese-spec Wagon R EV since 2018. In 2021, it announced its focus on electrified technologies in India and from the looks of it, the Wagon R EV could be its first electric offering, possibly in 2022.
The EV’s silhouette is similar to the standard model but it gets some bespoke elements. The test mule features a redesigned front fascia with a sleek grille (similar to the Teslas) and a split-headlamp setup featuring LED lighting as well as LED tail lamps. No changes have been made to the sheet metal. However, the alloy wheels seem to have been lifted from the Ignis.
Inside, the hatch could get redesigned upholstery and trims, setting it apart from the standard Wagon R. It could also feature climate control and a digital instrument cluster.
Other than that, the EV should retain most equipment, including the 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-mounted audio controls, remote locking, a multi-info display, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.
Maruti is yet to reveal the technical specifications of the upcoming EV but we expect it to feature energy regeneration and fast charging support for user convenience. It could offer a range of around 200km.
The upcoming electric hatchback will command a premium over the existing Wagon R, priced between Rs 4.80 lakh and Rs 6.33 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will rival the upcoming Mahindra eKUV100.
