British marque MG’s first ever EV, the eZS, is off to a flying start in its domestic market. The electric SUV has achieved 1,000 pre-bookings within two weeks of its launch on 17 July in the UK.
The MG eZS SUV is an all-electric iteration of MG’s ZS SUV. It is offered in two variants in the UK. And the first 1,000 customers will get the eZS at a discounted price tag of 21,495 pounds (Rs 18.49 lakh) for the Excite variant and 23,495 pounds (Rs 20.20 lakh) for the Exclusive variant. Additionally, these customers will also receive a complimentary home charging unit, something that future customers won’t get. However, the discount offer will be extended to the next 1,000 units sold.
On the outside, it features various exterior goodies including LED DRLs, auto headlamps, LED tail lights and a ‘star rider’ grille with an integrated charging port. The higher-spec Exclusive variant gets extra features like silver roof rails and foldable mirrors.
Aside from that, the MG eZS will get a rotary drive selector, 3 regenerative braking modes and Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes like the Hyundai Kona Electric. Safety features for the SUV include front and side airbags, ABS, EBD, seatbelt reminder, and ESP. It also gets various driving aids in international markets.
Inside, the eZS comes with a variety of creature comforts and gizmos including an 8-inch hi-res touchscreen with satellite navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth audio streaming. The MG eZS also boasts 448 litres of boot space to provide additional storage for outdoor items.
Powering the electric SUV is a water-cooled 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that in tandem with a front-mounted electric motor delivers 143PS of power and 353Nm of torque. It propels the SUV from 0-100kmph in 8.5 seconds and tops out at 140kmph. The eZS has a range of upto 262km on a single charge on city-highway combined WTLP range and 371km for the city-only range. The battery pack charges up to 80 per cent in 40 minutes when using a 50 kW fast charger and 6 more hours when plugged to a 7kW wall-box charger. If you want to see how it fares against the Hyundai Kona Electric head here.
MG UK offers a 7-year/80,000-mile warranty on its eZS and its lithium-iron battery. It will be interesting to see what sort of warranty it gets in India.
The MG eZS SUV goes on sale in the UK in September with a price tag of 28,495 pounds (Rs 24.49 lakh) for the lower-spec Excite and 30,495 pounds (Rs 26.21 lakh) for the higher-end Exclusive variant without the discount offer. It will make its way to India on December 2019 with an expected price tag of Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom pan India), to keep it competitive against the Kona Electric which is also priced similarly here.
