Mini’s first all-electric car, the Cooper SE has been teased in a video. The teaser demonstrates the Mini hatchback pulling the gargantuan Boeing 777F which weighs a mammoth 145 tonnes. The purpose of the teaser is to demonstrate the torque produced from the all-electric motor.
The Cooper SE is expected to be powered by the E-Drive motor of the BMW i3s. It produces 184PS of power and 250Nm of torque. While 250Nm of torque might not sound great (even the Hyundai Verna CRDi produces more), it is produced right from the word go, unlike conventional cars which need the engines to be spooled up to produce peak torque.
The i3s can do 0-96kmph in 6.8 seconds and do 246km on a full charge. This figure can be extended by 76km if you opt for the range extender. Fueling the i3s is a 42kWh lithium-ion battery which allows you to recharge up to 80 per cent in 40 minutes if you juice it up with a fast charger. According to reports though, the Cooper SE is expected to use the 33.8kWh battery from the older i3s model which is good for a range of only 180km.
The Mini Cooper SE is based on the 3-door Cooper S. While the basic silhouette and design remains the same, it gets few distinguishing elements. The Cooper SE gets a new front grille with the ‘E’ badge, yellow inserts all around and a new set of alloy wheels to differentiate it from the standard car. The interiors of the Cooper SE haven’t been revealed yet, but based on the exterior changes, we expect a similar treatment on the inside as well.
The Mini Cooper SE is expected to be revealed globally by the end of this year. The Mini Cooper SE is likely to hit international markets by next year. The Mini Cooper SE takes on the likes of Volkswagen’s e-Golf.
Considering the fact that emission norms are becoming more stringent in our country, Mini could bring its all-electric offering as a niche product here. Fingers crossed!
