Honda Cars India has recently shared that all its cars manufactured since January 1, 2009, are E20 (20% ethanol-blended) petrol-compliant and have received government certification for the same. This makes Honda the first carmaker in India to have its entire lineup aligned with this government regulation well ahead of the assigned deadline.
For customers, this means you can safely fill your Honda’s fuel tank with E20 petrol without worrying about replacing any car parts, no matter if you own a second-generation Honda City. That said, here’s an understanding of what this compliance means.
The Government of India has mandated that all petrol-propelled mono-fuel and bi-fuel vehicles with positive ignition engines, including hybrids, manufactured on or after April 1, 2025, must be certified for Ethanol (E20) fuel compliance under the prevailing emission norms.
This compliance requires a vehicle to be able to run on E20 fuel consisting of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. This helps in reducing carbon emissions hence contributing to lesser air pollution. Also, it lessens the dependence on imported crude oils and can support our Indian farmers by creating demand for ethanol-producing crops. This compliance is rather important for India’s greener future.
Honda Cars India currently offers the fifth-gen City and City Hybrid sedans, the Elevate SUV, and the second-gen and 2024 Amaze sub-4m sedans in its portfolio. The Amaze last received a generational update, introducing segment-first ADAS features. Meanwhile, the City was the latest to get a special Apex Edition, featuring minor cosmetic tweaks. As for the Elevate, it now comes in a new Black and Signature Black Edition, featuring an all-black theme.
Honda Cars has always had a loyal fan base in India, a near niche of its own. Let alone, the immense popularity of the Honda City in the country. With this newly attained certification, trust among car buyers is bound to grow, and while it might not lead to a massive surge in sales, it could still give Honda a slight boost. Regardless, the brand’s farsighted vision remains commendable.
