The new BMW 2 Series Coupe, featuring sharper looks and improved tech, has been unleashed. And in typical BMW fashion, the Munich carmaker has done extensive work underneath the skin to make it more fun to drive than ever before.
As with all BMWs, the 2 Series Coupe looks sharp. The familiar kidney grille (that thankfully isn’t very big) is flanked by a conventional set of LED headlamps instead of BMW’s corona ring DRLs. Then there are the bumpers with triangular airdams, lending the coupe a mean look.
Fun Fact: The new headlamps have been inspired by the legendary BMW 02 models.
On the side, the 2 Series Coupe, with its smooth flowing lines, now looks a whole lot softer than its predecessor. That said, the 19-inch alloys and muscular wheel haunches on the top-spec variant lend it a sporty look. The single-piece LED tail lamps and large dual exhausts round off the design.
Inside, the 2 Series Coupe’s dashboard has been lifted from the 2 Series Gran Coupe. This ain’t a bad thing at all as the design and quality of the materials is pretty similar to the 3 Series. Also, the higher-spec variants feature sports front seats and steering wheel. To know what we thought of the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s dashboard, read our first-drive review.
Even the equipment list is quite long, consisting of BMW’s i-Drive infotainment system, a digital driver display, three-zone climate control, steering-mounted audio controls, cruise control, and powered front seats. As with all BMWs, you can choose an optional head-up display, Harman Kardon sound system, and heated steering wheel and front seats.
Now to the exciting bit. The 2 Series Coupe is offered with standard four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as well as a straight-six petrol motor exclusive to the M240i. In fact, this is the same unit powering the M340i, one of the most fun rides we’ve had to date.

The new 2 Series Coupe is based on the chassis that was actually developed for the 4 Series. The 2 Series Coupe’s front and rear tracks are wider than its predecessor by 54mm and 31mm, respectively. The stiff torsional rigidity, low centre of gravity, and the 50:50 body weight distribution ensure the coupe is more fun to drive than ever before.
In India, BMW retails the hardcore version of the previous-gen 2 Series Coupe, the M2. Chances are that the carmaker will offer the high-performance models -- M240i and the upcoming M2 -- of the new 2 Series Coupe as halo products. The 2 Series Coupe locks horns with the Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG A35.
