Audi has unwrapped the next generation of its coupes, the A5, and its sportier version, the S5 in Germany. Both the cars are based on the next-gen Audi A4 which we tested last month. The current generation of the S5 is available in the country. And the next-generation S5 takes up a rather evolutionary approach on the design front with many mechanical and technological upgrades.
Rupert Sandler, Audi’s board chairman said: “Our coupes turn every day into a holiday for our customers.” He further added, “We have more performance and better fuel economy, much more space, and the standard spec brings our midsize coupes to the level of a luxury car.”
On the design front, the all-new A5 and S5 draw a lot from the current car, but as is the case with every other next-gen Audi, the A5 series gets a leaner and meaner design. The headlamps are sharper with a new DRL setup, and so are the grille and bumper scoops. The bonnet too gets sharp creases converging towards the nose. The sides get an imminent shoulder crease that tones its self down as it meets the tail lamp. Speaking of the rear, the tail lamp unit now wears a triangular setup rather than the squarish one as on the current S5. The new design also cuts the drag co-efficient of these cars and brings it down to 0.25.
The next-gen vehicle also loses as much as 60 kilos compared to the current cars. Under the hood of the A5, there is the 2.0-ltre TFSI inline four-cylinder motor that also powers the next-gen A4. The motor produces 255PS of power. On the diesel front, there will a 3.0-litre V6 diesel for the top-spec trim. The A5 will come mated to a standard 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the S5 will get an 8-speed unit and a 3.0 V6 TFSI petrol good for 354PS. Compared to the outgoing car, the next-gen engines are 20 per cent more powerful and also boasts of improved fuel efficiency.
Both the cars are expected to be launched by the end of this year globally, and since the S5 is available in India, Audi could replace it with the new car sometime in 2017.
